I wish this were a franchise so someone would just hand me the playbook

Happy March! New season, new beginnings.

I'm excited to announce that I'm launching my first live cohort of Scale to Exit™: The HiPer8™ Guide to a Self-Running Franchise in two weeks. It's a 6-week course with 12 months of implementation support for existing franchise owners who want to grow their business while simultaneously reducing their dependence on it.

I've spent the past year helping people get into franchising. Now I'm excited to help them succeed in franchising too.

And let me tell you, building this course has been humbling.

The Irony of Building a Course About Franchising

Here's the thing about franchising. When you buy a franchise, someone hands you the playbook. They've figured out the systems, the technology, the processes. You just execute.

Building this course? The exact opposite.

I had to figure out how to create course content. How to set up the technology platforms to host everything. How to build a community infrastructure. All from scratch.

The platform technology alone has been brutal.

I thought I'd watch a couple YouTube tutorials and knock it out. Instead, I've spent hours clicking through menus, trying to understand backend systems, watching video after video trying to piece together how these platforms actually work.

It's taken way longer than I estimated. Like, embarrassingly longer.

And you know what kept running through my head? "Man, I wish this were a franchise and someone just handed me the playbook!"

The irony is not lost on me.

But here's what I realized. This is exactly what lifelong learning feels like. You're the expert in your domain, but the moment you step into something new, you're a beginner again.

And that's uncomfortable.

I know franchise operations inside and out. I can coach someone through buying, launching, and scaling a franchise business. But setting up course hosting platforms? I'm fumbling through YouTube like everyone else.

The temptation is to wait. To keep learning until you've got it all figured out. To make it perfect before you launch.

But perfection is a trap.

I'm launching this course in two weeks, and it's not going to be perfect. I'm going to screw some things up. The technology might hiccup. The content might need adjusting.

And that's the point.

This live cohort is my validation phase. I'll get real feedback from real franchise owners. I'll learn what works and what doesn't. Then I'll use that to build the online version.

Version 1.0 is always messy. But if you wait for version 10.0 before you start, you never ship.

🎯 HiPer8™ Principle: Lifelong Learning

"I am always learning, never a finished product"

Lifelong learning isn't about collecting certifications or reading business books (though those can help). It's about maintaining the mindset that you're always a work in progress.

Three dimensions matter most:

1. Embracing being a beginner

You're going to suck at new things. That's not a character flaw, it's a feature. The willingness to be bad at something is what separates people who grow from people who stagnate.

I'm an expert at franchise operations. I'm a beginner at course platforms. Both can be true.

2. Progress over perfection

Perfect is the enemy of shipped. Launch before you're ready. Ship version 1.0. Learn from real feedback, not hypothetical scenarios.

Every franchise owner I've worked with had imperfect systems when they opened. They refined as they went. That's how growth works.

3. Learning from feedback

The fastest way to learn is to put something out there and see what breaks. This live cohort will teach me more in 6 weeks than 6 months of planning ever could.

Whether you're exploring franchise ownership or you've been operating for years, the learning never stops. Markets change. Technology evolves. Customer expectations shift.

The question isn't whether you'll need to learn new things. It's whether you're willing to look incompetent while you do.

Try this: Ask yourself - What am I not learning because I'm afraid to look incompetent? Then go learn it anyway.

When Plan A Fails, Purpose Gets Clearer
It's been a weird snow season here in the Pacific Northwest. Lots of precipitation, but not cold enough. The resorts have been struggling. Last week we finally got a few days of epic conditions. My daughter Pia (home from college) and I were stoked. First run of the season. We left the house at 7am. We arrived at 9am, and that's when the parking lot attendant told us the power went out. Resort...
The Unglamorous Work Nobody Sees
Happy New Year! Hope you had a great holiday season. I just got back from 10 days in Japan with my family. We visited Tokyo and Kyoto- they were both fantastic. If you've ever thought about visiting, I'd highly recommend it. _*]:min-w-0"> Now that we're a couple days into January, are you feeling the pressure yet? New year, new you and all that? The Self-Doubt Barrier
Greetings! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I spent mine with family in Seattle, eating way too much lumpia and enjoyed having Pia (older daughter) back home from college. December's here. I've been thinking a lot about the decisions people make (or don't make) as the year winds down. A few weeks ago, I talked with someone who had everything. Strong operations background. $300K liquid. Cle...
